Let's Talk About Pokemon - The Pidgey Family

016: Pidgey

Mmm, yeah, even among this beginning stretch of "basic" Pokemon used to ease people into the setting, the Pidgey family here comes off as a little too mundane. At least by this point we've had a giant man-wasp and a bulbous, funny butterfly, and immediately after this is a purple cartoon rat. Pidgey's little more than an anime sparrow. And while that perhaps isn't objectively bad in any way, it still feels incredibly generic.

Just LOOK at this original sprite. This is comical. THAT'S JUST A BIRD. That's not a Pokemon!! It's JUST A REGULAR-ASS BIRD. WHAT are you doing here?!?

017: Pidgeotto

Wait, no, I didn't mean THAT kind of anime!! While Pidgeotto is more or less the start of a cool trend where the common Flying type is a raptorized version of a common songbird, Pidgeotto is still a pretty plain anime bird, where even some funky pink hair doesn't do it any wonders either.

018: Pidgeot

No, Pidgeot! I don't care if you add a yellow streak to your hair! Yeah, I don't get where this line was really going. Pidgeot is so much just like Pidgeotto that people commonly just get their names confused.

Mega Pidgeot

Oh, I always really forget Pidgeot even has a Mega. Eh. It's Yu-Gi-Oh Protagonist hair doesn't impress me very much, and the fact that this line is just the same bird getting progressively more elaborate hair is just funny at this point. Maybe as a design idea, this "The same Pokemon but with bigger hair" idea could've worked if it was like, a cockatoo or cockatiel, but otherwise eh. These are some of the plainest Pokemon out there.
